The relaxation drink shelf makes a specific promise: the unwinding part of a drink without the alcohol. Ashwagandha, L-theanine, magnesium, lion’s mane, various botanicals, sold in a well-designed can with words like calm and clarity on the front.

The question worth asking is not whether the ingredients have any research behind them. Several do. It is whether the amount in the can you are holding does anything, and whether anyone has ever tested the can itself.

# The regulatory gap that explains most of this

In the US there is no legal category called a functional beverage. The FDA treats a product as either a conventional beverage or a dietary supplement, and the rules differ sharply between the two.

That matters because dietary supplements do not need to demonstrate efficacy before sale. A drink can contain an ingredient with genuine research behind it, at a dose far below the one that was studied, and market itself on the strength of that research without breaking any rule.

Brands are not allowed to claim a product treats or reduces the risk of a disease. They are allowed to say it supports calm. The gap between those two sentences is where this entire category lives.

# Ashwagandha: real evidence, complicated

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the most studied ingredient in the category, and the evidence is better than sceptics expect and weaker than the packaging implies.

Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials have found reductions in stress and anxiety scores against placebo, along with reductions in cortisol, typically over about eight weeks of daily supplementation.

Two caveats do a lot of work:

The findings are not uniform. A 2025 meta-analysis found a significant reduction in cortisol but no significant effect on perceived stress. Lowering a stress hormone and making somebody feel less stressed are not the same result, and the literature does not consistently deliver both.

The trials used daily capsules, not drinks. Doses in the research typically run in the hundreds of milligrams per day, sustained over weeks. A can consumed on a Friday evening is a different intervention: different dose, no accumulation, and no trial behind it.

Reviews also note that long-term safety data is limited. There have been case reports of liver injury associated with ashwagandha supplements, which is worth knowing if you drink these regularly rather than occasionally.

# L-theanine: modest and fast-acting

L-theanine is the amino acid in tea associated with alert calm. It has been reviewed across randomised trials in people with anxiety and related conditions, and unlike ashwagandha it acts acutely rather than needing weeks to build.

That makes it a better theoretical fit for a drink. The effects reported are real but modest, and the same dose question applies: check the label against the amounts used in trials, which are usually in the 200mg range, rather than assuming the presence of the word on the can means the amount was chosen to match the research.

# Magnesium, lion’s mane and the rest

Beyond those two the evidence thins quickly.

Magnesium is legitimately involved in nervous system function, and correcting a deficiency has real effects. Supplementing when you are not deficient is a different proposition and the evidence for a calming effect in that case is weak.

Lion’s mane, rhodiola, and the wider adaptogen list all have some preliminary research, mostly small studies, often not in the population or format being sold to you. Preliminary is not the same as promising, and neither is the same as established.

# Two ingredients that deserve a genuine warning

Most of this category is, at worst, an expensive placebo. Two ingredients are not in that bracket.

# Kava

Kava does have anxiolytic effects, which is precisely why it turns up in relaxation drinks. It also has a documented association with severe liver injury.

The FDA issued a consumer advisory about kava and liver damage in 2002. By the end of 2005 the World Health Organization had received 91 reports covering 189 adverse reactions to kava-only products, of which 55 involved the liver and biliary system, including cases of hepatic failure. Several European countries including Germany, the UK and Switzerland introduced bans or severe restrictions.

The picture is genuinely debated. Rates of liver injury among traditional Pacific Island users of aqueous root preparations appear very low, and some researchers attribute the European cases to extraction methods or plant parts not used traditionally. That debate does not help you evaluate an unlabelled extract in a canned drink.

If you drink alcohol at all, have any liver condition, or take any medication processed by the liver, kava is not a sensible swap.

# Kratom

Kratom is sometimes marketed near this category as a relaxant. It should not be treated as an alcohol alternative.

The FDA has approved no uses for kratom and classifies it as an unapproved botanical drug, with import alerts in place. Products tested have been found to contain contaminants including heavy metals and harmful bacteria. Kratom acts on opioid receptors, and dependence and withdrawal are documented. In July 2025 the FDA recommended that the DEA schedule synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, one of its potent constituents, under the Controlled Substances Act.

Swapping a substance you are trying to reduce for one with dependence potential and no quality control is not harm reduction.

# Check whether you are buying a stimulant

A number of drinks sold on calm and focus also contain caffeine, sometimes a substantial amount, sometimes listed only as green tea extract or guarana rather than as caffeine.

This is worth catching for two reasons. If you are drinking one in the evening as a wind-down, a stimulant is working against the thing you bought it for. And if you are cutting down on alcohol partly because of sleep, replacing an evening beer with an evening stimulant can leave your sleep no better, which is a discouraging result to get for the right effort.

Caffeine content is often on the label. Where it is not, the ingredient list usually gives it away.

# The placebo question, answered fairly

A reasonable objection to all of the above: if a drink makes somebody feel calmer, does the mechanism matter?

For enjoyment, no. Expectation and ritual produce real effects, and an evening drink you look forward to is doing something whether or not the botanical is responsible.

It matters when you are paying several times the price of soda water for the ingredient specifically, and it matters when the ingredient carries risk, which is the case for kava and kratom above.

# A fair way to judge one

If you like a drink, that is a good enough reason to buy it, and the ritual of holding something interesting is worth real money when you are trying not to drink. The problem is only paying a premium for a health claim.

Three questions that sort most products quickly:

  1. Is the dose on the label, and does it match the research? “Contains ashwagandha” is not a dose. Compare the milligrams to the trial amounts.
  2. Is the effect supposed to be acute or cumulative? An ingredient that needed eight weeks of daily dosing will not do much in one can on a Friday.
  3. Would you still buy it if the label said nothing? If yes, buy it and enjoy it. That is a perfectly good drink.

Worth saying plainly: if the thing you actually want from a drink is to feel different, no legal canned botanical is going to replicate what alcohol does. The drinks that work best as substitutes tend to succeed on ritual, taste and being cold and in your hand, rather than on pharmacology.

# Talk to someone before mixing these with medication

Supplement ingredients interact with prescribed drugs, and the interactions are not always obvious. This matters especially if you take anything for sleep, anxiety or mood, or a medication for alcohol use such as naltrexone or disulfiram.
