How to Change the App Language, Currency and Units

AlcoLog picks its language from your iPhone, its currency from your region, and its drink sizes from where you are. You can change the language and the currency yourself. This walkthrough shows where each one lives and what happens to the drinks you have already logged.

# Step 1. Change the app language

AlcoLog has no language picker of its own. It uses the standard iOS per-app language setting, so you can run AlcoLog in one language while the rest of your iPhone stays in another.

1. Open the iPhone Settings app (not the Settings tab inside AlcoLog).
2. Scroll down and tap Apps, then AlcoLog.
3. Tap Language and choose one of the languages listed.

AlcoLog restarts in the new language. If you do not see a Language row, add a second language to your iPhone first under General > Language & Region, then come back.

AlcoLog is available in 14 languages:

• हिन्दी
• Bahasa Indonesia
• 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese)

If your iPhone is set to a language that is not on this list, AlcoLog shows English. Currency names in the pickers follow your language too, so the British pound reads “Britisches Pfund” in German.

# Step 2. Choose your default currency

Every drink you log is stamped with a currency. By default that is your iPhone region’s currency. To pick a different one:

1. In AlcoLog, open the Settings tab and tap Display & Haptics.
2. Scroll to the Currency card and tap Default Currency.
3. Pick a currency from the list. The one you choose gets a checkmark and the row shows its symbol and code, for example £ GBP.

The list has 25 currencies. If your iPhone’s own currency is not one of them, it is added to the bottom of the list so you can still choose it. Choosing a default currency is free.

# Step 3. Let the currency follow you when you travel (Premium)

With Premium, the Auto-switch by location toggle sits under Default Currency. On the free plan the row shows a PREMIUM badge instead of the toggle.

1. Turn on Auto-switch by location.
2. Allow location access if iOS asks. AlcoLog needs it to know which country you are in.
3. A line appears under the toggle showing the country and currency in use, such as Detected: FR → € EUR. If it says Location not yet detected. The app will check when you open it., open AlcoLog again once you have a signal.

AlcoLog checks your country each time the app starts up. When you land somewhere new, new drinks are stamped in the local currency. The Default Currency row keeps showing your own pick: that is the fallback AlcoLog uses whenever it cannot work out where you are, and the one it goes back to if you turn the toggle off.

# Step 4. Check the price on each drink

When you log a drink, the Cost per Drink field in Add Drink is pre-filled with a typical price for that type of drink in your current currency, for example £5.50 for a beer in pounds or $8.00 in US dollars. These are rough averages, so type what you actually paid.

With Premium, you can also tap the currency symbol next to the price to log just that one drink in a different currency. Changing the symbol does not convert the number: it only changes which currency the price is recorded in.

Drinks you log on your Apple Watch use the same currency as the phone.

# Step 5. Know what happens to drinks you already logged

AlcoLog never converts money between currencies. Each drink keeps the currency it was logged in, so changing your default currency today leaves last month’s prices exactly as they were.

If a week or month holds more than one currency, AlcoLog keeps them apart instead of adding euros to pounds:

• Places with room for only one number, such as a widget, show the amount in the currency you spent most in, rather than a sum of two currencies.
• On the History tab, the Cost chart shows one currency at a time. When the range covers more than one, a small row of currency chips appears so you can switch between them.

# Step 6. Understand how drink sizes and units follow your region

Drink sizes are not tied to your currency or your language. They follow where you are, and this works on the free plan:

• If you have allowed location access, the Add Drink size list opens on the region you are physically in, so a pint means a UK pint in London and a US pint in New York.
• Without location access, AlcoLog uses your iPhone’s region setting instead.
• You can always tap a different region chip above the sizes, such as UK, USA, Europe, Australia or Asia, or All to see every size.

For a size that is not listed, use the Custom size row. It opens in fl oz if your iPhone uses US measurements and in ml everywhere else. Tap the unit button beside the number to switch between ml and fl oz. AlcoLog remembers your choice.

Alcohol is always counted in UK units, whatever language, currency or region you use, so your totals stay comparable from one trip to the next.
