AlcoLog 2.2.0 is now live on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch. AlcoLog 2.2.0 for Android will be releasing later this week.

# AI scanning

Logging a drink now takes a photo instead of typing. Four scanners use AI:

  • Snap a drink: tap the camera button on the Add Drink form, take a photo of your glass, bottle or can, and AI fills in the drink with its strength, size and calories.
  • Scan a menu: from the same camera button, photograph the bar’s drinks menu and AI reads every drink on it, with its prices, so you pick yours from the list.
  • Scan a receipt: when you add a past session (on Home, tap “Forgot to track? Tap here to add a past session”, then Continue), tap the receipt icon at the top right of Add Drink and photograph the receipt. AI reads the whole round, every drink and what it cost.
  • Smarter barcodes: scan a barcode from the camera button as before; AI checks what the product databases found and fills in the type, size and any missing strength or calories (each product found uses an AI scan).

You always see what the AI read before anything is logged, and you can change any detail first.

# Free scans and Premium

Everyone gets 5 free AI scans in total to try it, shared by all four scanners. Premium includes 20 AI scans a day, shared the same way. A scan that finds nothing, fails or times out never counts. Tap the free scans row any time to see Premium. Once your free scans are used up, each scanner still explains itself, and Continue opens Premium.

# How it works, and what is sent

The scanners are read by an AI model from OpenAI, through AlcoLog’s server. Before your first AI scan the app explains this, and nothing is sent until you tap Allow.

  • What is sent: the photo you take of a drink, a menu or a receipt, or for a barcode the product details the databases returned and its barcode number. With it go your app language, region and currency, whether Sober Mode is on, your platform, the app version and a random install identifier, plus proof that the request comes from the real app and, for Premium, proof of your subscription.
  • What is never sent: your drinking history, health data, location or name.
  • What is kept: AlcoLog never stores your photos or what the AI reads from them. OpenAI does not use them to train its models; it may keep them for up to 30 days to check for abuse, then deletes them.

You can switch AI scanning off any time in Settings, under Data & Privacy. Photo, menu and receipt scans are then read on your phone, as they also are with no connection. The privacy policy has the full detail, and the barcode and photo scanner tutorial and the receipt tutorial walk through each scanner.

# AlcoLog in Thai

The whole app, its widgets and the Apple Watch app now speak Thai, AlcoLog’s 16th language. The App Store listing is in Thai too. This website now reads in Thai and Polish as well, so it covers every language the app speaks.
