AlcoLog v1.3.1 is out now on the App Store and on Google Play. It is a small release carrying one fix that matters more than its size suggests: if you live outside the United Kingdom, the weekly target AlcoLog set for you was stricter than the guideline named beside it.

# Your weekly target now matches your country’s guideline

AlcoLog counts alcohol in UK units. Every health authority publishes its weekly low-risk guidance in its own measure, and a US standard drink, an Australian standard drink and a UK unit are three different amounts of alcohol. The old code took each authority’s published number and used it as it stood, without converting it into what the app counts in. The number survived the journey. Its unit did not.

The result was a target that asked for less than the authority printed beside it. In the United States it asked for 44% less than NIAAA advises, in Australia 21% less than the NHMRC advises, and in Canada 41% less than the CCSA advises. The error only ever ran one way: nobody was told they could drink more than their own health authority recommends.

v1.3.1 converts at the source, so the guidance your country publishes is the guidance AlcoLog sets:

  • United Kingdom and Ireland: the Chief Medical Officers’ 14 units a week
  • United States: NIAAA’s low-risk limit of 14 standard drinks a week
  • Australia and New Zealand: the NHMRC’s 10 standard drinks a week
  • Canada: the CCSA’s 2023 guidance of 2 standard drinks a week

The goal screen now names the authority and shows its own figure alongside your target, so you can see the guidance in the measure it was written in instead of one number quietly contradicting the other.

If you set your own weekly target, it is left exactly as you set it. This release moves only the default that comes from your region’s guidance.

# Widgets count against your target

The weekly bar on your widgets was counting against a fixed number rather than the target you chose. It now uses yours, and it matches what your watch shows.

# Sizes open on the kind of drink you are logging

Photograph or edit a can, a bottle, or a glass of something fizzy, and the size list opens on that kind of drink rather than on the full list of every size there is.

# Both platforms, same version

The v1.3.0 post said the Android update was expected on Google Play before the end of September. It is there now, and it arrived carrying both releases: Menu Scanner, the seven languages, the three-step Add Drink screen, and the v1.3.1 fixes above.

That corrects something this site had wrong. Our features page said Menu Scanner was available on iPhone only, which was true the week it was written and stopped being true when Android shipped. Menu Scanner is a Premium feature on both platforms now, and the line has come off in all seven languages.

iPhone, Apple Watch, Android and Wear OS are on the same version from here.

As ever, everything stays private and on your device, with no account to create.
